AUSTRALIA 82
1982, April 18th, The Palais, Melbourne, Australia

1.Girls On Film - 2.Anyone Out There - 3.To The Shore - 4.Late Bar - 5.Last Chance On The Stairway - 6.Hungry Like The Wolf - 7.Night Boat - 8.Faster Than Light - 9.Planet Earth - 10.Hold Back The Rain - 11.Careless Memories - 12.My Own Way - 13.Girls On Film (night version)

Audio Quality: FAIRLY GOOD SOUNDBOARD (sb7/8)
Notes: On April 15th, 1982 the guys started their "Rio Tour" from Adelaide, Australia. The CD I'm talking about now contains the recording of the third show of this tour. The setlist is very interesting because, at that time, the Rio album was still unreleased, and most of the songs are off the first album. Actually, the tracklist is very similar to the "Careless Memories Tour" latest shows, and you can easily verify it by checking the "Live at Odeon" setlist in the Early Shows page. You will just find two differences. The "Rio Tour" show starts with "Girls On Film" and two new songs are added to the setlist: the unreleased "Hold Back The Rain" and a great "Hungry Like The Wolf", that at the end mutes in the intro of "Night Boat". They had already done something similar during the "Faster Than Light Tour" concerts, with the transition between "Fame" and the "Night Boat" intro (see "Amsterdam 81" or "Live in Washington"). This is an enjoyable CD, even if the audio quality is not excellent (but not terrible, either!). It has a great historical value and I think any collector should have it.

JAPAN 82 first show
1982, April 25th, Nihon Seinen-Kan, Tokyo, Japan

1.Tel Aviv - 2.Sound Of Thunder - 3.Girls On Film - 4.Anyone Out There - 5.To The Shore - 6.Late Bar - 7.Last Chance On The Stairway - 8.Hungry Like The Wolf - 9.(Waiting for the) Night Boat - 10.Friends Of Mine - 11.Faster Than Light - 12.Planet Earth - 13.Hold Back The Rain - 14.Careless Memories - 15.My Own Way - 16.Girls On Film (night version)

Audio Quality: VERY GOOD AUDIENCE (au9)
Notes: After the last Australian show in Sidney, on April 22nd, Duran Duran reached Japan, where they spent one week playing five gigs. This bootleg contains the full recording of the first one, in very good audience quality. The setlist is very similar to the Melbourne 82 one, but tonight the show starts with "Tel Aviv" and "Sound Of Thunder", and they also played "Friends Of Mine" in the middle of the show. This recording has a strange history, because it seen the light twenty years later; I don't know who recorded the show, and the reason why he decided just in 2000 to trade with some other fan for this bootleg. Anyway, finally we have the chance to listen to this old and rare concert!

JAPAN 82 second show
1982, April 28th, Nakano Sun Plaza, Tokyo, Japan

1.Sound Of Thunder - 2.Girls On Film - 3.Anyone Out There - 4.To The Shore - 5.Late Bar - 6.Last Chance On The Stairway - 7.Hungry Like The Wolf - 8.(Waiting for the) Night Boat - 9.Friends Of Mine - 10.Faster Than Light - 11.Planet Earth - 12.Hold Back The Rain - 13.Careless Memories - 14.My Own Way - 15.Girls On Film (night version)

Audio Quality: EXCELLENT AUDIENCE (au10)
Notes: The second of three Japan 82 gigs, recorded in excellent audience quality (could be a good soundboard...). Same tracklist than the first Tokyo show, but the opening song ("Tel Aviv") is missing here. This cd is a must for every fan that love the early days of Duran Duran career... so am I!

JAPAN 82 third show
1982, May 01st, Shibuya Kokaido, Tokyo , Japan

1.Tel Aviv - 2.Sound Of Thunder - 3.Girls On Film - 4.Anyone Out There - 5.To The Shore - 6.Late Bar - 7.Last Chance On The Stairway - 8.Hungry Like The Wolf - 9.Friends Of Mine - 10.Faster Than Light - 11.Planet Earth - 12.Hold Back The Rain - 13.Careless Memories - 14.My Own Way - 15.Girls On Film (night version)

Audio Quality: FAIR AUDIENCE (au7)
Notes: The third of three Japan 82 gigs. The quality is not so good as the previous two, but it's not too bad. A good companion to complete the "1982 japanese shows" series.

WASHINGTON 82
1982, June 24th, Ontario Theatre, Washington DC, USA

1.Rio - 2.Hungry Like The Wolf - 3.Girls On Film - 4.Last Chance On The Stairway - 5.New Religion - 6.Planet Earth - 7.Hold Back The Rain - 8.Careless Memories - 9.Anyone Out There

Audio Quality: VERY GOOD AUDIENCE (au9)
Notes: This is not one of the most famous bootlegs of the "Rio Tour" era, and it's a shame, because this is a very well made recording, in very good / excellent audience quality. At that time the guys were touring the US, to promote their brand new Rio album... but I think the highlight of those concerts was the beautiful, powerful punk version of "Anyone Out There?", available in most of the 82 bootlegs. If you like the Rio era gigs, or if you like "Anyone Out There?", you DO NEED this CD! There are some static noises, especially during "Planet Earth", and the problem occurs in any copy I listen to, so you can't find a better one... Anyway, the rest of the recording is really awesome!

LOS ANGELES 82
1982, July 28th, Greek Theatre, Los Angeles DC, USA

1.Rio - 2. Girls On Film - 3. Last Chance On The Stairway - 4.Hungry Like The Wolf - 5.Sound Of Thunder - 6.Night Boat - 7.New Religion - 8.Friends Of Mine - 9.Planet Earth - 10.Hold Back The Rain - 11.Careless Memories - 12.Anyone Out There - 13.Girls On Film

Audio Quality: VERY GOOD AUDIENCE (au9)
Notes: This is an ultra rare early recording. The show here presented was the last ever USA concert of the Rio world tour; actually, the band don't had a break nor traveled in Europe; but they played many shows in August, supporting the Blondie tour. This show is very good, with the full tracklist and a good quality; my favourite moments are "Sound Of Thunder", "Friends Of Mine", "Hold Back The Rain" and the second take of "Girls On Film".

LIVE IN CENTRAL PARK 82
1982, August 08th, The Savoy, New York NY, USA

1.Rio - 2.Hold Back The Rain - 3.New Religion - 4.Save A Prayer - 5.Hungry Like The Wolf - 6.Planet Earth - 7.Careless Memories - 8.Girls On Film

Audio Quality: EXCELLENT SOUNDBOARD (sb10)
Notes: During the eighties this bootlegs was released in a vinyl called "Live in Central Park". Later on, someone created two different CD bootleg calling them "Live at the Savoy" and "The Ritz 82"... These two boots are the same recording, and both are mislabelled. The real place was the Palladium, New York, and the real date was December 31st, 1982... Yes, this is actually the MTV New Year's Eve Performance! The guys never played any "Savoy" or "Central Park" or "Ritz" shows, because on August 8th, 1982 they played a concert in Chicago IL, at the "Poplar Creek". So, go to the MTV New Year's Eve Bootleg for every correct infos.

SOUND OF THUNDER
1982, August 09th, Pine Knob Theatre, Detroit MI, USA

1.Rio - 2.Girls On Film - 3.Last Chance On The Stairway - 4.Hungry Like The Wolf - 5.Night Boat - 6.New Religion - 7.Friends Of Mine - 8.Planet Earth - 9.Hold Back The Rain - 10.Careless Memories - 11.Anyone Out There

Audio Quality: GOOD SOUNDBOARD (sb9)
Notes: This is a Blondie Support show and, of course, a great cd. This is a good stereo soundboard quality recording, and this concert has a very strange atmosphere, and great energy. Most of the songs were played faster, especially "Anyone Out There?" and "Last Chance On The Stairway". There is a lot of confusion concerning the real place and date of this show. We know for sure that it was performed in Detroit, but some says it was played Pine Knob Theatre on August 09th, and someone else (not me) thinks the right place was the Clutch Cargo, and the right date was July 09th... Actually, it is possible that this is an August, not July recording, because Simon introduces "Hungry Like The Wolf" saying: "This one, is our new single, off the album Rio ", and in August they released another new single, "Save A Prayer". But the tracklist of this cd is the one performed during the Blondie Support Gigs, and the guys played a Detroit show during that tour... So, if you already have a Detroit CLUTH CARGO recording, don't trade for this PINE KNOB CD, because it's the same show... but if you have no Detroit 82 bootlegs, you must trade for it! "Anyone Out There (punk version)" and "Friends Of Mine" are also included in "Perfect Days Now And Then". "Planet Earth" has some small gaps... but this is a really great bootleg!

THE BLONDIE WARM UP GIG
1982, August 14th, Meadowlands, East Rutherford NJ, USA

1.Rio - 2.Girls On Film - 3.Last Chance On The Stairway - 4.Hungry Like The Wolf - 5.Night Boat - 6.New Religion - 7.Planet Earth - 8.Hold Back The Rain - 9.Careless Memories

Audio Quality: FAIR SOUNDBOARD (sb7)
Notes: It seems that the Blondie gigs have to be difficult to identify! This cd is circulating with a couple of names, and of course a couple of venues and dates! So, this is the SAME show that someone calls "Cedar Groove", in a slightly better quality. The show is complete, tonight no "Fiends Of Mine" or "Anyone Out There" where in the setlist... what a shame: the punk version of "Anyone Out There" that the guys played during the 82 shows is superb!

DRAKEN THEATRE 82
1982, September 23rd, Draken theatre, Stockholm, Sweden

1.Rio - 2.My Own Way - 3.Lonely In Your Nightmare - 4.Last Chance On The Stairway - 5.Hungry Like The Wolf - 6.Night Boat - 7.New Religion - 8.Hold Back The Rain - 9.Anyone Out There - 10.Careless Memories - 11.Girls On Film

Audio Quality: VERY GOOD AUDIENCE (au8/9)
Notes: This is a famous bootleg of the "Rio Tour" era, but maybe it's not one of the best. The most noticeable thing of it is that this CD includes a good version of "My Own Way", different from the version featured in the 81 bootlegs. Since the guys were promoting the Rio album, the tracklist is particularly focused on the Rio songs, so they played "My Own Way" in the slow album version, which is different from the fast video version they had always played in the early shows. The slow album version of that song became longer and longer during the tour, and you can listen to the definitive 6 minutes long version in the November and December UK gigs. There is a small gap during "New Religion". This bootleg is definitively a must for the "completists", and a good choice for those who love the Rio songs.

TRINITY HAMBURG 82
1982, October 04th, Trinity Stadium, Hamburg, Germany

1.Intro - 2.Rio - 3.My Own Way - 4.Anyone Out There - 5.Last Chance On The Stairway - 6.Lonely In Your Nightmare - 7.Hungry Like The Wolf - 8.Night Boat - 9.New Religion - 10.Friends Of Mine - 11.Planet Earth

Audio Quality: FAIR AUDIENCE (au7)
Notes: A great show, unfortunately not in excellent quality. A lot of energy at the beginning of the show, with "My Own Way", the great punk "Anyone Out There" and "Last Chance On The Stairway". "Rio" starts at the second verse. The first part of the cd has a little better audio quality (if you add more bass at the recording, it could be a good audience), but the sound, from (the fast version of) "Lonely In Your Nightmare" to the end of the cd, it's fair. The show is not complete, missing the last three songs.

SCOTLAND 82
1982, October 31st, Apollo, Glasgow, Scotland, UK

1.Intro - 2.Rio - 3.Anyone Out There - 4.Hungry Like The Wolf - 5.Last Chance On The Stairway - 6.Save A Prayer -7.Planet Earth - 8.Hold Back The Rain - 9.Careless Memories - 10.Make Me Smile - 11.Girls On Film

Audio Quality: VERY GOOD SOUNDBOARD (sb9)
Notes: This is a very good radio broadcast, not perfect, but really nice. The show was originally taped, so you can hear a very slight background noise, while some of the DJ's spoken parts are cut out. But that is definitively not annoying and I could rank it 9 out of 10. I really love the energy of this concert (just listen to "Careless Memories" and let me know...), and it's a sin that this recording is not complete. My favourite moment on this CD is "Make Me Smile". It is a rare chance to listen to a different performance of that song (not the same performance appearing in "The Reflex" b-side, but the one included in "Planet Earth" and "Two For The Show" bootlegs) in a soundboard quality. Unfortunately, the song is not complete (the last minute is missing), and I'm looking for a replacement... can anyone help me? Some other new performances of that song are in St. Austell and Birmingham 82 CDs, but not in soundboard quality. "Girls On Film" is not from the same show but comes from the "Planet Heart" CD (London 82).

BBC COLLEGE CONCERT
1982, November 15th, Hammersmith Odeon, London, UK

1.Intro - 2.Rio - 3.Hungry Like The Wolf - 4.Last Chance On The Stairway - 5.Lonely In Your Nightmare - 6.Sound Of Thunder - 7.Hold Back The Rain - 8.New Religion - 9.Friends Of Mine - 10.Save A Prayer - 11.Careless Memories

Audio Quality: EXCELLENT SOUNDBOARD (sb10)
Notes: Maybe this is the most famous Rio Tour era bootleg. This show is also included in "In Person" bootleg CD, and was released in the eighties as a (mislabelled) picture disc called "Live in San Francisco 10/27/85", showing a nice portrait of Simon. It was also released as a vinyl bootleg called "Religion", showing a John Taylor pic on the cover and including all the "BBC College Concert" tracks plus "Planet Earth". The College Concert was broadcasted on BBC twice (the second time, as "BBC Rock Hour 83", which is the same show with a longer intro), and has a GREAT audio quality. I really like the way they played that gig and, of course, I love the faster version of "Lonely In Your Nightmare" and the energetic performance of "Friends Of Mine". If you are right now starting to collect Duran Duran live recordings, I tell you that THIS IS REALLY THE BEST CHOICE you can do.

PLANET HEART
1982, November 16th, Hammersmith Odeon, London, UK

1.Rio - 2.Hungry Like The Wolf - 3.Night Boat - 4.New Religion - 5.Save A Prayer - 6.Planet Earth - 7.Careless Memories - 8.Make Me Smile - 9.Girls On Film

Audio Quality: VERY GOOD SOUNDBOARD (sb9)
Notes: This is the first Duran Duran bootleg released in CD, back in '89. According to sleeve mentions it was recorded in New Your in 1984, but this is an error; because it was actually London 1982. It also exists in video (of very good image and audio quality). The audio quality is technically a lo-FI mono soundboard, but I actually could rank this CD 9 out of 10. The famous version of "Make Me Smile", featured as "The Reflex" b-side in 84, was recorded during this show, but here it is presented in a shorter version than the b-side one. "Girls On Film" is a "night version" long performance, also containing the band intro and some brief solos of the Duran Duran members. These two songs, together with the first two ones ("Rio" and "Hungry Like The Wolf") are also included in the A side of the "Live in America" vinyl bootleg, whilst the B side features four tracks from Oakland 1984.

SHEPTON MALLET 82
1982, November 18th, Showering Pavillions, Shepton Mallet, UK

1.Rio - 2.Hungry Like The Wolf - 3.Lonely In Your Nightmare - 4.Sound Of Thunder - 5.Night Boat - 6.New Religion - 7.Save A Prayer - 8.Planet Earth - 9.Hold Back The Rain - 10.Careless Memories - 11.Make Me Smile - 12.My Own Way - 13.Girls On Film

Audio Quality: FAIR AUDIENCE (au7)
Notes: This is a famous bootleg of the Rio UK Tour; the most known copy has a terrible audio quality, but the cd listed here is not so bad (and I'm very happy!). It's a decent audience recording, that contains the majority of the show (not the full show - unfortunately). The most noticeable thing on this recoding is that you can clearly hear the JT bass lines! Andy's guitar and Nick's keyboards are audible in the background. About the performance, my favourite moment is "Make Me Smile": Simon's voice is very sweet at the beginning of the song, and very very energetic during the chorus.

ST. AUSTELL 82
1982, November 22nd, Cornwall Coliseum, St. Austell, UK

CD1: 1.Intro - 2.Rio - 3.Hungry Like The Wolf - 4.Last Chance On The Stairway - 5.Lonely In Your Nightmare - 6.Sound Of Thunder - 7.Night Boat - 8.New Religion - 9.Friends Of Mine
CD2: 1.Save A Prayer - 2.Planet Earth - 3.Hold Back The Rain - 4.Careless Memories - 5.Make Me Smile - 6.My Own Way - 7.Girls On Film

Audio Quality: EXCELLENT AUDIENCE (au10)
Notes: A very good bootleg: the audio quality is very very good, especially for and old show, and this is (with the Birmingham 82 cd) the only one 82 bootleg with the FULL show recording! You will find here powerfull versions of "Hold Back The Rain", "Careless Memories", "Sound Of Thunder" and "Friends Of Mine"; you can enjoy yourself listening to Simon singing "Planet Earth" forgetting the right lyrics; you have here a great performance of "Make Me Smile" and you can hear the crowd singing "My Own Way" during the instrumental intro of the song. I highly recommend this bootleg to all of them that really love the Duran duran early stuffs!

BIRMINGHAM 82
1982, December 01st, Odeon, Birmingham, UK

CD1: 1.Intro - 2.Rio - 3.Hungry Like The Wolf - 4.Last Chance On The Stairway - 5.Lonely In Your Nightmare - 6.Sound Of Thunder - 7.Night Boat - 8.New Religion - 9.Friends Of Mine
CD2: 1.Save A Prayer - 2.Planet Earth - 3.Hold Back The Rain - 4.Careless Memories - 5.Make Me Smile - 6.My Own Way - 7.Girls On Film

Audio Quality: VERY GOOD AUDIENCE (au9)
Notes: This is one of the best "Rio Tour" 2cd-set I've ever listened to in my collector "career". It includes a rare FULL show of this tour, and is very well recorded. The audio quality is good and the performance is awesome. In the late 82 UK shows, the guys didn't play the punk version of "Anyone Out There?", and during the "Rio Tour" they NEVER played "The Chauffeur"!! Anyway, this bootlegs is your chance to listen to a full 82 show, in particular the one the guys played in their home town, with their families and friends in the audience. Would you loose this chance?

MTV NEW YEAR'S EVE
1982, December 31st, Palladium, New York NY, USA

1.Rio - 2.Hold Back The Rain - 3.New Religion - 4.Save A Prayer - 5.Hungry Like The Wolf - 6.Planet Earth - 7.Careless Memories - 8.Girls On Film

Audio Quality: EXCELLENT SOUNDBOARD (sb10)
Notes: Ok... the same recording of "Live at the Savoy", "Live in Central Park" and "The Ritz 82", but with all the right references this time! This is the performance the guys made for MTV (also available on video). The audio quality is excellent, the songs very well performed and Simon's spoken parts are very funny; if you don't have this CD (or one of the mislabelled copies), you DO need it in your collection!
